Specifically,\u00a0 Ijaws and Binis have collectively contributed to the social, economic, and political development of the area. This peaceful coexistence remains one of the greatest strengths of the local government and must never be sacrificed on the altar of ethnic chauvinism or political intolerance.<\/p>\n<p>It is against this backdrop that concerns have been raised over recurring statements allegedly made by some Oto Edo youth groups describing Ijaws and other non-Bini ethnic groups as &#8220;settlers&#8221; and questioning their political participation within Edo State. Such narratives, if left unchecked, have the potential to create unnecessary tension among communities that have lived together peacefully for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Political competition is a normal feature of democracy. However, attempts to define political rights based on ethnicity rather than citizenship risk undermining the very foundations of democratic governance.<\/p>\n<p>The latest reports suggesting that the Oto Edo Youths are warning and cautioning political parties against giving House of Assembly tickets to Ijaw candidates in Ovia South-West have generated fresh concerns among observers of Edo politics. In a democratic society, political parties are expected to choose their candidates based on their internal processes, electoral calculations, competence, popularity, and political strategy\u2014not on ethnic threats or intimidation.<\/p>\n<p>No ethnic group should arrogate to itself the authority to determine who is qualified to contest elections on behalf of a political party. Such decisions belong to political parties and ultimately to the electorate who exercise their constitutional right through the ballot box.<\/p>\n<h3>A Message to the Palace<\/h3>\n<p>Traditional institutions occupy a sacred place in Nigerian society. They serve as custodians of culture, promoters of peace, and symbols of unity among diverse communities.<\/p>\n<p>The Palace of the Oba of Benin remains one of the most respected traditional institutions in Africa. Its influence extends beyond cultural preservation to peacebuilding and social harmony.<\/p>\n<p>It is therefore important that the palace continues to promote messages of unity and coexistence among all ethnic groups living within the Benin Kingdom and Edo State at large. Whenever public statements or activities appear capable of inflaming ethnic sentiments, respected institutions have a moral responsibility to encourage restraint and peaceful engagement.<\/p>\n<p>History teaches that ethnic conflicts often begin with words before escalating into actions. Responsible leadership requires that potentially divisive narratives be discouraged before they develop into larger societal challenges.<\/p>\n<p>The preservation of peace should remain the collective responsibility of community leaders, traditional institutions, political actors, youth organizations, and government agencies alike.<\/p>\n<h3>A Message to the Bini People of Ovia South-West<\/h3>\n<p>To the good people of Udo, Iguobazuwa, Siluko, Ora, Ofunama, and every Bini community across Ovia South-West, the reality on the ground is evident to all.<\/p>\n<p>For decades, Bini and Ijaw communities have lived side by side as neighbors, business partners, friends, and in many cases, members of the same extended families through intermarriage and shared economic activities.<\/p>\n<p>The ordinary people understand one another far better than political actors sometimes suggest.<\/p>\n<p>The developmental challenges facing many communities in Ovia South-West do not discriminate between Bini and Ijaw. Poor roads affect everyone. Limited healthcare facilities affect everyone. Youth unemployment affects everyone. Inadequate educational infrastructure affects everyone.<\/p>\n<p>The true challenge before voters is therefore not ethnicity but leadership.<\/p>\n<p>As the 2027 political season gradually approaches, voters should critically examine candidates based on competence, accessibility, integrity, accountability, courage, and their demonstrated commitment to community development.<\/p>\n<p>The question should not be: &#8220;Which tribe does this candidate belong to?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The question should rather be: &#8220;Who can best represent our interests and bring development to our communities?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Democracy flourishes when citizens vote according to conscience and competence rather than ethnic sentiments.<\/p>\n<h3>Editorial Perspective<\/h3>\n<p>The future of Ovia South-West cannot be built on division. It must be built on partnership.<\/p>\n<p>The people of the area have far more in common than they have differences. They share the same roads, schools, markets, rivers, economic opportunities, and developmental challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Political power should never become an instrument for ethnic exclusion.
