The Identity Question in Edo State: Understanding the Concerns of Indigenous Ijaw Communities<\/h4>\n

The debate surrounding the identity and status of indigenous Ijaw communities in Edo State has remained one of the most sensitive issues in the Niger Delta. For decades, communities in Okomu Kingdom, Olodiama Kingdom, Furupagha Kingdom, Gbaraun Kingdom, Egbema Kingdom and other Ijaw settlements have consistently maintained that they are indigenous inhabitants of their ancestral lands and should be recognized as such.<\/p>\n

A document presented during the Toru-Ebe State inquiry process on September 14, 2009, highlighted some of the grievances expressed by Ijaw communities in Edo State. According to the document, the concerns of the people extend beyond political representation and economic development to include questions of cultural identity, historical recognition and the preservation of their heritage.<\/p>\n

Historical Concerns<\/h4>\n

The major argument advanced by many Ijaws in Edo State is that their struggle is not based on claims of superiority over any other ethnic nationality, but on the desire to preserve their distinct cultural identity.<\/p>\n

According to the findings cited in the inquiry, there have been allegations that several Ijaw towns and villages in Edo State were renamed with Edo names over the years without the knowledge of the Ijaws. Community leaders argue that such actions amount to attempts to diminish or alter the historical identity of indigenous Ijaw settlements.<\/p>\n

Supporters of this position insist that the issue is not whether the Ijaws are strangers in Edo State, but whether they should be compelled to abandon their language, customs and historical heritage in favour of another identity.<\/p>\n

The Question of Indigenous Identity<\/h4>\n

The indigenous Ijaw communities maintain that they possess unique cultural traditions, speak the Ijaw language and have historical connections with neighbouring Ijaw communities in Delta and Bayelsa States.<\/p>\n

They argue that communities in Egbema,\u00a0 Furupagha, Gbaraun, Okomu and Olodiama have preserved their traditional institutions and cultural practices for generations and should therefore continue to be recognized as distinct ethnic communities within Edo State.<\/p>\n

Many Ijaw stakeholders have emphasized that their demand is not for assimilation of other ethnic groups into Ijaw identity. Rather, they advocate mutual respect among all ethnic nationalities in the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n

Comparisons With Other Minority Groups<\/h4>\n

Those who support the Ijaw position often point to examples from other parts of the Niger Delta.<\/p>\n

In Ondo State, the Apoi people, despite speaking Yoruba, continue to maintain their own historical identity. Similarly, some Ijaw communities in Delta State coexist peacefully with neighbouring ethnic groups while preserving their language and traditions.<\/p>\n

Proponents of this argument contend that cultural coexistence should not require the abandonment of indigenous identities.<\/p>\n

Developmental Concerns<\/h4>\n

Beyond the issue of identity, the 2009 inquiry document also raised concerns about infrastructure and development in Ijaw communities in Edo State.<\/p>\n

The report alleged that despite the presence of significant natural resources, particularly crude oil, many Ijaw areas remain underdeveloped. It further claimed that government institutions and social amenities are unevenly distributed across the state.<\/p>\n

Community leaders have repeatedly called for equitable distribution of development projects, improved infrastructure, educational opportunities and greater political representation.<\/p>\n

The Need for Peaceful Coexistence<\/h4>\n

The relationship between the Ijaw and Benin ethnic nationalities has a long and complex history. While disagreements over identity and historical narratives continue, many stakeholders believe that peaceful coexistence and mutual respect remain the only sustainable path forward.<\/p>\n

Every indigenous people has the right to preserve its language, customs, history and cultural heritage. Equally important is the recognition that Nigeria’s strength lies in its diversity and the ability of different ethnic groups to coexist peacefully.<\/p>\n

As discussions continue, dialogue, historical research and constitutional processes should guide efforts to address longstanding grievances and foster unity among all communities in Edo State.<\/p>\n

Conclusion<\/h4>\n

The identity question involving the indigenous Ijaw communities of Edo State is not merely a political debate; it is fundamentally about history, culture and the right of every people to preserve their heritage.<\/p>\n

Regardless of differing perspectives, sustainable peace can only be achieved when all ethnic groups are treated with dignity, fairness and mutual respect. The future of Edo State depends on building bridges of understanding that recognize diversity as a strength rather than a source of division.<\/p>\n
