In what appears to be the first wave of political realignments ahead of the forthcoming 2027 Nigerian General Elections, the Kwara State Government has directed civil servants intending to contest for elective public offices to resign from their positions in accordance with constitutional provisions guiding public service conduct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The directive was conveyed in an official circular dated March 13, 2026, and signed by Dr. Okedare Adeyinka on behalf of the Kwara State Head of Service. The circular was addressed to heads of government establishments across the state, including commissioners, chairmen of commissions, permanent secretaries, and heads of extra-ministerial departments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the circular, the government reiterated that public officers who intend to participate in the electoral process must first disengage from public service to comply with Nigeria\u2019s constitutional and administrative regulations. The directive cited the provisions of the Code of Conduct for Public Officers contained in the 1999 Constitution, as well as relevant public service rules governing neutrality in the civil service. The directive from the Kwara government was also influenced by the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for the 2027 elections. According to the electoral schedule, party primaries are expected to commence on April 23, 2026, and end on May 30, 2026, while nationwide campaigns will follow ahead of the polls. Cross River Government Issues Similar Order<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

In a similar development, the Cross River State Government has also directed members of the State Executive Council and other political appointees who intend to contest in the 2027 elections to resign from office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The directive was issued by the state governor, Bassey Otu, who stressed the importance of separating governance from political ambitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking during a State Executive Council meeting, the governor instructed that all affected officials must step down from their positions on or before March 26, 2026, if they plan to participate in the upcoming elections. (Punch Newspapers<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governor Otu emphasized that holding public office is a sacred responsibility that must not be compromised by early political campaigning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As such, any official who intends to run for elective office must resign before entering the political arena to avoid conflicts of interest and ensure fairness among political aspirants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Governance analysts believe that as the political atmosphere gradually builds toward the 2027 elections, similar directives may emerge from other states and government institutions across Nigeria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
