INEC Throws Open Digital Gates for Ekiti Election Ad-Hoc Recruitment Ahead of 2027 Political Showdown
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has officially commenced the recruitment of ad-hoc staff for the forthcoming Ekiti State governorship election scheduled to hold on Saturday, June 20, 2026, in what political observers have described as one of the earliest major electoral preparations ahead of Nigeria’s broader 2027 political season.
The electoral body made the announcement through its official social media platforms, calling on qualified Nigerians to apply through its designated online recruitment portal before the closing date of May 18, 2026.
According to INEC, the recruitment exercise opened on Saturday, April 25, 2026, and is targeted at strengthening electoral logistics, transparency, and operational efficiency for the off-cycle governorship election in Ekiti State.
Positions Available for Recruitment
INEC disclosed that several sensitive electoral positions are available for interested applicants. These include:
- Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs)
- Presiding Officers (POs)
- Assistant Presiding Officers (APOs)
- Registration Area Centre (RAC) Managers
- RATECHs (Technical Support Staff)
The commission emphasized that all applications must be submitted through its official recruitment portal.
Eligibility Requirements for Applicants
INEC further outlined the categories of persons eligible to apply for each position.
For Supervisory Presiding Officers (SPOs), applicants must be public or civil servants on Grade Levels 10 to 14 or serving INEC officials not currently assigned to other election duties.
For RAC Managers, applicants must either be heads of schools or staff members of institutions and public facilities designated as Registration Area Centres, with a minimum qualification level equivalent to Grade Level 07.
Meanwhile, those eligible to apply as Presiding Officers or Assistant Presiding Officers include:
- Serving members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)
- Penultimate students of tertiary institutions with sound ICT knowledge
- Permanent staff of Ministries, Departments, and Agencies possessing OND qualifications or operating within Grade Levels 07 to 10
- INEC permanent staff on Grade Levels 07 and 08
- Former corps members who completed service between 2023 and 2026
For RATECH positions, applicants are expected to possess strong ICT backgrounds and may include qualified INEC ICT personnel from both state offices and headquarters not already assigned to other responsibilities.
Strict Conditions from INEC
The electoral umpire also issued stern warnings and conditions for prospective applicants.
INEC maintained that applicants must not be members of political parties or individuals who have publicly demonstrated support for political candidates or parties.
The commission additionally directed applicants to apply only in states where they currently reside, except for RATECH personnel whose deployment may vary according to operational needs.
INEC advised previous applicants from earlier elections to reapply under categories that accurately reflect their current qualifications and employment status.
Preparations Intensify for Ekiti Governorship Election
Political analysts believe the recruitment exercise signals the commencement of serious groundwork for the Ekiti governorship election, where incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is expected to seek another mandate.
Observers also note that INEC’s early recruitment strategy may help reduce logistical challenges and improve electoral credibility, especially amid increasing national attention on Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 general elections.
INEC Recognises SDP Leadership
In another major political development, INEC recently updated its official records to recognise the leadership of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) headed by Shehu Gabam as the authentic National Working Committee of the party.
The recognition followed a Court of Appeal judgment delivered in Abuja on March 27, 2026, affirming Gabam’s leadership after a legal dispute over the party’s structure.
The updated records also listed Dr. Olu Agunloye as National Secretary alongside other national officers of the party.
The development has continued to generate reactions within Nigeria’s political space as parties reposition ahead of the highly anticipated 2027 elections.
Growing National Attention
With political activities already gaining momentum across the country, many Nigerians see INEC’s recruitment exercise as an opportunity for youths, students, corps members, and public servants to participate directly in the democratic process while also earning temporary income.
