NRM Unveils Female Presidential Candidate, Declares War Against APC, NDC Ahead of 2027
Nigeria’s political landscape witnessed another dramatic shift on Friday as the National Rescue Movement (NRM) formally unveiled Dr. Esther Nkem Okereke as its consensus presidential candidate for the 2027 general elections, declaring its readiness to challenge and unseat the nation’s dominant political forces.
The historic emergence of Dr. Okereke at the party’s presidential primary convention in Abuja has already sparked conversations across the country, particularly as the NRM positions itself as a fresh alternative platform promising national rebirth, youth inclusion, institutional reform, and women-driven leadership.
In what party leaders described as a “national rescue mission,” the convention attracted delegates, stakeholders, party executives, and supporters from across the federation, all united around the message that Nigeria requires urgent transformational leadership capable of addressing worsening insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and governance failures.
Speaking during the convention, the National Chairman of the National Rescue Movement, Prince Dr. Chinedu Obi, declared that the country was facing one of the most difficult periods in its democratic history and urgently needed visionary leadership driven by competence, patriotism, and accountability.
According to him, the NRM convention was not merely another political gathering but a national declaration that Nigeria could rise again despite the deepening social and economic challenges confronting millions of citizens.
The party chairman painted a troubling picture of the current state of the nation, lamenting the growing insecurity, displacement of families due to insurgency and communal conflicts, worsening poverty, and the frustration of unemployed graduates whose dreams, he said, have been continuously delayed by poor governance.
Prince Obi maintained that Nigeria’s problems were not caused by lack of resources but by persistent leadership failures and the inability of the political class to align governance with national interest and development priorities.
He emphasized that the National Rescue Movement was founded as a platform dedicated to social justice, constitutionalism, transparency, accountability, and rule of law, stressing that the party’s “Rescue Nigeria Blueprint” would focus heavily on security reforms, economic revitalization, healthcare improvement, educational advancement, institutional rebuilding, and empowerment of youths and women.
The NRM leadership further disclosed that after a rigorous screening process, Dr. Esther Nkem Okereke emerged as the only aspirant who successfully met all constitutional and procedural requirements for the party’s presidential ticket.
Her emergence as the party’s consensus candidate is already being interpreted by observers as a bold political statement aimed at redefining gender participation in Nigeria’s political structure.
In her acceptance speech, Dr. Okereke described her nomination as a sacred national assignment rather than a personal achievement, promising to lead what she called a movement of hope, integrity, competence, and national recovery.
She lamented the worsening economic realities confronting ordinary Nigerians, noting that many citizens continue to struggle despite the country’s enormous natural and human resources.
According to her, millions of Nigerians live in darkness in a nation blessed with abundant energy resources, while graduates roam the streets without employment opportunities and farmers remain unable to access their farmlands because of insecurity.
The presidential candidate blamed corruption, lack of vision, and systemic governance failure for the nation’s present condition and vowed that the NRM would pursue people-centered reforms capable of restoring public confidence in leadership.
Dr. Okereke unveiled what she described as the “ESTHER Agenda,” a six-point development framework designed to guide her administration if elected president in 2027.
The agenda focuses on:
- Education, Energy and Economic Renaissance
- Security, Social Welfare and Sustainable Development
- Technology, Transparency and Transformation
- Housing, Healthcare and Human Capital Development
- Entrepreneurship and Employment Creation
- Restitution, Reorientation and Recovery
She promised to prioritize emergency reforms in the education and power sectors, modernize security institutions, digitize governance systems, expand healthcare access, and create sustainable employment opportunities through entrepreneurship and industrial development.
In a message directed at young Nigerians, Dr. Okereke declared that the nation’s youths should not be viewed as liabilities but as the greatest strength capable of driving national transformation if properly empowered.
She also urged Nigerians to reject divisive politics rooted in ethnicity and religion and instead support leaders based on competence, integrity, and vision.
According to her, the National Rescue Movement is determined to dismantle political godfatherism and create wider opportunities for women and youths to actively participate in governance and national decision-making processes.
Earlier during the convention, Chairman of the NRM Electoral Committee, Barrister Obidike Okolo, stated that the party was committed to building a political culture rooted in equity, accountability, sustainable development, and competence-based leadership.
He stressed that the NRM seeks to break away from the old political order by lowering financial barriers that often prevent credible Nigerians from participating in politics.
Political observers say the emergence of a female consensus presidential candidate may significantly reshape political conversations ahead of the 2027 elections, especially among young voters, women groups, reform advocates, and citizens seeking alternatives to the traditional political establishment.
As campaigns and political realignments gradually intensify nationwide, many analysts believe the National Rescue Movement may become one of the emerging political forces to watch in the coming electoral cycle.
