Why Every Citizen Must Be Politically Conscious

Politics is often misunderstood by many citizens who view it as an exclusive affair reserved for politicians and political office holders. However, the reality is that politics affects every aspect of our daily lives. From the roads we drive on, the schools our children attend, the hospitals we visit, the security of our communities, and even the prices of goods and services, politics influences virtually every dimension of society.
Political awareness, therefore, is not merely an option; it is a civic responsibility.
A politically aware society is a society that understands its rights, appreciates its responsibilities, and actively participates in the democratic process. Such a society is less vulnerable to manipulation, misinformation, and political exploitation.
One of the greatest challenges facing many developing democracies is political apathy. Many citizens choose to remain indifferent to political developments until policies begin to affect their personal lives. Unfortunately, by then, critical decisions may have already been made without their input.
Political awareness empowers citizens to make informed choices during elections. It enables voters to assess candidates based on competence, integrity, vision, and capacity rather than ethnicity, religion, financial inducements, or emotional sentiments. Democracy functions effectively only when citizens are equipped with accurate information and the ability to critically evaluate political actors and public policies.
Another important benefit of political awareness is accountability. Elected officials are more likely to perform effectively when they know that citizens are monitoring their activities. A politically conscious population understands that governance is a continuous process that extends beyond election day. Democracy does not end at the ballot box; it continues through active citizen engagement, advocacy, and oversight.
Young people, in particular, must recognize the importance of political participation. The future belongs to them, and their involvement in governance is essential for sustainable development. Rather than viewing politics as a dirty game, young people should see it as a platform for leadership, innovation, and societal transformation.
Political awareness also promotes national unity. When citizens understand the workings of government and appreciate the principles of democracy, they become less susceptible to divisive narratives designed to create conflict among communities. Instead, they focus on issues, policies, and solutions that advance the collective interest of society.
Furthermore, political consciousness encourages community development. Citizens who understand governmental structures are better positioned to advocate for infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment opportunities, and social welfare programmes. They become active stakeholders in governance rather than passive observers.
As Nigeria continues its democratic journey, there is an urgent need for increased civic education and political enlightenment. Citizens must cultivate the habit of reading, verifying information, engaging in constructive dialogue, and participating in lawful democratic processes.
Political awareness is not about blind loyalty to political parties or personalities. It is about understanding how governance works, demanding accountability, supporting good policies, and contributing positively to national development.
The strength of every democracy ultimately depends on the quality of its citizens’ participation. A politically informed electorate produces better leaders, stronger institutions, and more prosperous societies.
As citizens, we must remember that democracy thrives not when a few people participate, but when everyone understands their role in shaping the future.
