BREAKING: NASS TRANSMITS 1999 CONSTITUTION REVIEW BILLS TO 36 STATE ASSEMBLIES

ABUJA — The National Assembly has transmitted the proposed Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (Sixth Alteration) Bills to the 36 State Houses of Assembly for consideration, marking a major stage in the ongoing review of Nigeria’s 1999 Constitution.
The development was reported on September 16, 2026, with Channels Television also reporting that the transmission follows legislative work by both chambers of the National Assembly on proposed constitutional changes. (Channels Television)
The State Houses of Assembly now have a constitutional role in considering the proposed alterations. According to the report, after the National Assembly receives the resolutions of the state legislatures, it will proceed with the next steps required under the Constitution. (Channels Television)
The latest development moves the constitutional review process from the National Assembly to the state legislatures, putting the proposed amendments before lawmakers across Nigeria’s 36 states.
The process is significant because constitutional alterations require participation by the state Houses of Assembly before the relevant amendments can proceed through the remaining constitutional procedure.
