Darkness in Ofunama as Revered Military Icon Rev. Dr. Col. J.G. Jibor Passes On
A heavy cloud of grief has descended upon Ofunama Community, the entire Egbema Kingdom, and the wider Ijaw people following the painful announcement of the passing of one of the region’s most respected elders, military icons, and spiritual leaders, Rev. Dr. Col. J.G. Jibor (Rtd).
The late elder statesman, who held several distinguished titles including FSS, MSS, DSS, and JP, reportedly passed away on May 27, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of courage, service, sacrifice, and dedication to humanity.
News of his death spread rapidly across communities in the Niger Delta, triggering an outpouring of sorrow, tributes, and emotional reactions from family members, community leaders, associates, and admirers who described him as a pillar whose impact would never be forgotten.
Many who reacted to the shocking news described the late Rev. Dr. Col. J.G. Jibor as a father figure, mentor, peace advocate, military strategist, and defender of oppressed communities within the Niger Delta region.
One of the mourners, Mr. Ebiye Peter, expressed deep pain over the loss, lamenting that “a great pillar has fallen in Ofunama, Egbema Clan and in the whole of the Ijaw Nation.”
He prayed for God to grant the departed elder eternal rest in the bosom of Jesus Christ while describing his death as a monumental loss not only to his immediate family but to the entire Ijaw ethnic nationality.
Another mourner emotionally described the late military officer as “the man that added honour to his community, kingdom and to the Ijaw Nation militarily.”
According to the tribute, the late Col. Jibor was known for standing firmly for vulnerable communities during difficult moments, especially during periods of military tension and harassment in parts of the Niger Delta.
“He rescued communities from military harassment on different occasions,” the mourner stated, while praying for his soul to rest in perfect peace.
A separate emotional reaction described the deceased as “the one we relied on,” while expressing grief over the painful reality of losing such a dependable elder and leader.
Throughout his lifetime, Rev. Dr. Col. J.G. Jibor reportedly earned enormous respect across the Niger Delta due to his combined roles as a retired military officer, clergyman, community leader, and advocate for peace and justice.
Residents of Ofunama Community recalled his contributions toward community development, conflict resolution, and youth mentorship, describing him as a man whose doors remained open to people seeking help, guidance, and protection.
Beyond his military accomplishments, many also remembered him for his spiritual commitment and fatherly role within the church and society.
Community stakeholders within Egbema Kingdom noted that his death marks the end of an era, especially for many younger generations who looked up to him as a symbol of courage, discipline, and service.
As condolences continue to pour in from different parts of the Niger Delta and beyond, many have called on the people of Ofunama and the larger Ijaw Nation to remain united and preserve the values of honour, courage, and communal responsibility for which the late icon stood.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in the coming days.
